This essay examines why Chinese veterans did not enjoy an enhanced sense of status and respect in society. It focuses on their health care, role as political whistle-blowers and post-military employment status. Particular attention is paid to the role of warfare and conceptions of masculinity, and the critical role which veterans' groups played in civil society with regard to spreading martial citizenship.
