This paper proposes a new approach to the way the rise of China is studied. The author criticizes the "challenge-response" framework of analysis prevalent in the literature on the subject. Rather than responding to a challenge from the Western World, the author argues that China's current rise reflects the reemergence of century-old traits some of which are unique to China. To reflect these considerations, the author proposes an alternative approach to the study of China's rise, dubbed "Sincization".
