This paper provides a conceptual framework to study the role religious organizations play in the democratic consolidation of East Asian societies. In particular, the text looks at how Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah, Indonesia’s two largest Muslim organizations, and the unorthodox Santi Asoke Buddhist organization in Thailand help deepen and preserve democratic practices in both countries.
