This article discusses the causes of the loss of value of Venezuela’s currency against the US dollar between 1999 and 2010. The author emphasizes the expansion of the monetary base of fiscal origin, the unfavorable outlook generated by the political context and the abandonment of constitutional mandates which prevent monetary financing of spending and require saving at times of increasing revenues.
