This paper traces the development of social policies in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. It discusses their development strategies and how these have been affected by external pressures and challenges. The paper begins with a brief discussion on the theoretical framework underpinning the analysis. It then looks at the social development indicators of both countries and briefly assesses their progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
