This commentary considers the international dimensions of Germany's recent climate-compatible energy policy. The authors argue that the transformation of Germany's energy sector should become one of the main issues of Germany's foreign relations. Germany needs international partners to help minimize the costs of changing its current energy mix and to increase the country's international influence. By viewing energy policy as an element of foreign relations, Germany would increase its soft power, enabling it to become a leader in shaping the future of a global, low-carbon economy.
