This report looks at sectarian violence in Gilgit-Baltistan, a historically distinct political entity under Pakistani control near the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir. The paper provides background information to the tensions between Shia and Sunni communities in Gilgit-Baltistan which have increased since the 1980s. It concludes with concrete policy-recommendations for a long-term effort of building peace in the region. According to the author, such an effort must be multidimensional and multigenerational and should include education, political development, and equity in access to economic and social opportunities.
