China has acted as a mediator between the Myanmar central government and the Kachin Independence Organization, a group which has clashed with the central government in 2011 and 2012. China has previously been offered the role of mediator in Myanmar but this is the first time China has accepted such a role. The author analyzes the rationale behind China's mediation and what it stands to benefit from peace in Myanmar.
