This report argues that climate change, and the extreme weather it can bring about, are forcing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to become involved in mitigation and response activities. The authors believe that climate change will require the ADF to play its part not in isolation but as part of a whole‑of‑government approach which includes identifying the threat, taking preventive action, reducing risk, and dealing with the consequences. Additionally, Australia should work with like-minded countries in the ‘Five Eyes’ community to share best practices and thinking on how military organizations can best respond to extreme weather events.
