This research paper focuses on the relations between the European Union and the United Nations concerning sanctions and more specifically targeted sanctions. The paper is divided in three chapters. The first gives a general background of sanctions at the UN level and explains the move from comprehensive sanctions to targeted sanctions. The second mostly focuses on EU policy toward sanctions. The third chapter focuses on that which is problematic by trying to respond to the question whether the concept of targeted sanctions is a one step forward two steps back phenomenon.
