Research in risk analysis has recognized the importance of building trust and user participation into any communication strategy. This report explores how visual materials, especially maps and diagrams, are being incorporated into such strategies. The design of visual materials determines the amount of information that can be conveyed to the public and authorities. The author discusses these issues with reference to conventional and new forms of mapping, and draws specific implications for the Swiss context.
