This report looks at the role extractive industries could play in peacebuilding efforts in Afghanistan. The author argues that integrating social accountability measures into the governance of these industries can help alleviate violent conflict by ensuring a more equitable distribution of the benefits as well as encouraging greater confidence in the state and a molding of the social contract. He concludes that without such mechanisms to promote some degree of social accountability, mineral extraction in Afghanistan may become a driver of violent conflict, as has been the case elsewhere.
