This note talks about the upsurge in violence which occurred in South Sudan in December 2013 and the political tensions within the ruling Sudan People's liberation Movement which led to it. The author says that a political solution is the only way forward in the situation; warning, however, that this will not be easy to achieve. He also touches upon reactions to the situation in the country by the UN, the UK, and Sudan.
