This analysis focuses on Japanese Prime Minister Abe's current defense policy, which continues to move away from the country's post-WWII policy of military self-restraint. After overviewing the latter policy's history, the analysis goes on to explore how a resurgent China and other factors have led Japan to 1) modernize and expand its military forces, 2) revitalize its alliance with the United States, and 3) become more assertive as a regional player.
