This commentary performs a realist cost-benefit analysis in order to explain China’s increasing (and unilateral) assertiveness in the South China Sea. Some of the influential factors at play here include ongoing domestic reform processes within China, its growing military capacity, and the inevitable invocation of historical and legal wrongs.
