This is a transcript of a speech by Shadi Hamid, fellow at the Brookings Institution, in which he examines how and why Islamist movements have changed over time, what guides their world view and how they wish to shape society. He also argues that, contrary to academic and conventional wisdom, democratization can push Islamist groups to pursue more illiberal positions, while repressive regimes can lead them to become more moderate over time.
