This analysis explores the growth of national independence movements within the member states of the EU, including in the Basque region, Catalonia, Flanders and Scotland. After considering what has revitalized or sustained these movements, including the recent European economic crisis and the behavior of existing governments or organization, the analysis concludes that Western Europe’s borders will most likely not be redrawn any time soon.
