This paper examines the impact of instability and conflicts in the Middle East on alliance formation and foreign policy making in the region. The author also examines how alliances and the balance of power between states in the Middle East have been affected by 1) the invasion of Iraq in 2003; 2) the Arab Spring and the subsequent sociopolitical transformations in the region; and 3) the foreign policy of US President Obama's administration towards the region.
