This book examines Russian President Vladimir Putin's effort to create a Eurasian Union, including 1) the ideological origins and character of this project; and 2) Putin’s strategic objectives in bringing it about and the tactics he has employed to achieve them. The authors also examine the response of eleven post-Soviet states to the initiative as well as that of China, the EU and the US. A main argument of the book is that if the Eurasian Union project is successful, it would jeopardize the gains of two decades of independence from Russia in countries ranging from Moldova to Tajikistan.
