This paper explores the policies the successor states of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) have adopted towards their respective Roma populations. The author first presents the official figures on the size of the Roma and related populations in the successor states and provides an overview of policies geared towards them. He then examines 1) the similarities and differences between these policies; 2) the position of Roma in these countries; and 3) what this position demonstrates about the policies in place.
