The most prominent feature of NATO’s military response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has been the Alliance’s “Spearhead Force” (VJTF). This CSS Analysis argues that although the concept has already been roundly criticized as nothing more than a symbol of alliance solidarity, it shouldn’t be judged exclusively on its military merits. Indeed, by looking into NATO’s Cold War history, we can see both the unit’s possibilities and limitations.
