This paper examines Australia's defense research and development policy, whether it is fit for purpose and what the country might do to capitalize more on its defense science and technology spending. It also compares Australia's defense research activities with those in other countries and looks at what role this research can play in Canberra's agenda to increase the competitiveness of its industries. In general, the authors contend that Australia's neighbors are increasing their research capacities and infrastructure, eroding the country's technological advantage in the defense domain. Consequently, they suggest that Canberra should focus more on gaining the most from its civilian science and innovation sector.
