This Insight examines the negative impact the so-called Islamic State (IS) has had on al-Qaeda's reach, recruitment and media presence. In particular, the piece's authors explore 1) the reasons behind IS's rise to power; 2) how the group has adapted more effectively than al-Qaeda to today’s operating environment; and 3) the not-to-be-forgotten threats that al-Qaeda still poses to the international system.
