Publication

Jun 2015

This publication describes the evolution of the global jihadist movement with a particular focus on 1) the legacy of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden; 2) the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and; 3) ISIS’ declaration of an Islamic Caliphate. In this context, the author also comments on the fallout between ISIS and al-Qaida and the impact of the so-called "Khorasan pledge", a pledge of allegiance signed by al-Qaida commanders from the Middle East, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Iran in April 2014.
