This paper discusses some of the complexities associated with Australia's ongoing procurement of 12 submarines. In particular, the author concentrates on the possibility that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot may reverse the previous government's decision to build the vessels domestically as well as the implications this could have for public debate on the issue, the country's manufacturing industry, the strategic needs of the navy, and the defense industrial requirements which will be expected of their ultimately chosen international partner.
