This issue of the Journal of Politics in Latin America contains articles on 1) the effect of organized labor on social spending in Latin American countries from 1980 to 2010; 2) the role of NGOs and international donors in South America and how their emphasis on self-expression and quality of life over economic and physical security does not correspond to concerns voiced in public opinion; 3) the relationship between news media consumption and political behavior in Latin America; 4) how Peru and the rest of Latin America can tackle low level corruption; and 5) the effectiveness of an initiative that started in 1993 to encourage political participation in local councils in Montevideo, Uruguay.
