This brief describes how over the last decade, Afghanistan has experienced the rise of a robust independent media sector. The author also explains media independence and safety remain at high risk in Afghanistan, that incidents of violence against journalists spiked in 2014, and that the government provides insufficient support for freedom of the press. She therefore suggests that the Afghan government should honor its campaign pledges to protect freedom of the press, as well as implement the 2009 Mass Media Law.
