This brief discusses a number of issues relating to the the importance of the maritime domain for world politics in the 21st century. In particular, the author discusses 1) the importance of Brazil's involvement in ensuring maritime security; 2) the dangers inherent in not appreciating the importance of the maritime domain in most human activities; 3) the countries and organizations which have the greatest stake in ensuring the security of the maritime domain; 4) how the US strategic rebalance towards Asia could affect maritime security; and 5) the importance of the maritime domain to the EU's security. He also comments on the significance of the April, 2015 “Declaration on Maritime Security” by the Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries.
