This brief examines the important role governors and state-level politics play in Nigeria. More specifically, the brief's author discusses 1) the economic influence that Nigeria's thirty-six states exert on the country's overall economy; 2) the leverage which state governors have in national politics; 3) the unofficial measures which some states have resorted to in order to deal with internal security threats; and 4) how state-level actors should be empowered to deal more effectively with Nigeria's economic, political and security problems.
