The study provides an overview of cultural and lingual developments in Kalmykia, one of the constituent republics of the Russian Federation. The study assesses and highlights the key features of the Language Act of Kalmykia, which was adopted in October 1999. The author argues that the act reflects a modern approach to linguistic diversity, in particular with regards to the political handling of the respective positions of the Russian and Kalmyk languages.
