This paper examines the basic ingredients of two large-scale regional free trade agreements being promoted by the US and China -- the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). While doing so, the text's author also examines 1) the institutional context within which the agreements are being negotiated; 2) some of the contentious issues surrounding the TPP; and 3) whether the different regional free trade agreements proposed for the Asia-Pacific region can actually complement each other.
