This paper looks at the links between unplanned urban expansion and the spread of disease, particularly by reviewing the impact of two outbreaks of avian flu in Vietnam. The text concludes that 1) transitional rural-to-urban areas have a much higher risk of these events than purely urban or rural areas, and 2) by focusing on such zones, countries like Vietnam could improve their disease prevention capabilities at lower costs.
