This report explores the role of the media in the promotion of peace. It explains how and when the media takes on beneficial or destructive roles, discusses the inherent tension between the needs of a peace process and news routines, and discusses major factors that influence these tensions. Subsequently, the paper outlines Israeli coverage of the Oslo peace process and local coverage of the peace process in Northern Ireland. The report argues that the role of the media in promoting peace cannot be identified unambiguously and depends on a number of points highlighted in the paper.
