This paper examines the relevance of the US Army’s training strategy for new types of operations such as peace enforcement and peace keeping. It analyzes the institutional changes resulting from lessons learned in successive peace operations, starting in 1989 with Operation Just Cause in Panama. It also surveys recent policy debates over the use of force, the role of contemporary peace operations in US foreign and national security policy, and the doctrinal underpinnings of the army’s training for operations other than war.
