This report analyzes the political situation in Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo). It explains the way society at large, as well as some of its economic and social arrangements, hold together to prevent the state from collapsing. The report also gives an overview of political structures in the country. It argues that the state has not broken apart because the population has learned to live beyond the reach of the state's authority and structures, and state intervention took place that decreased tensions.
