This report examines the problems connected to claims for self-determination in the former Soviet Union. It examines contemporary nationalism and the problems of self-determination, and presents case studies on the topic. Among the regions analyzed are Abkhazia, South Ossetia, the Crimea and Nagorno-Karabakh. The paper isolates typical conflict stages. It concludes by outlining approaches of decision-makers citing Sam Nunn, Margret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev and by listing criteria necessary for self-determination.
