This edition of the RAD focuses on the role of oligarchs in contemporary Russia. Firstly, Heiko Pleines notes that the political influence of oligarchs should be considered not only in terms of their influence on policies directly related to their business interests, but also their potential impacts on political regime change. Secondly, Elisabeth Schimpfössl outlines how newer generations of rich Russians tend to justify their wealth in ways that are more in line with international norms, rather than the assertions by the first generation that their success was due to biology.
