This paper investigates the growth and structure of employment in 14 major states in India from 1983 to 2005. The paper presents a brief review of the existing studies on income and employment disparities in India, pursues a state level analysis of gross state domestic product growth and employment and analyzes the concentration and diversification of the regional employment structure. Subsequently, the paper examines inter-state differences in labor productivity and educational attainment and presents a summary of the main findings. The paper finds that employment growth is defined by a lack of diversity and a concentration of low productivity jobs.
