This report by the United States Institute of Peace provides an overview of the lessons of the US humanitarian intervention in Somalia for future humanitarian and political interventions. It explains what was done and what opportunities were missed including preventive diplomacy, non-UN military intervention and UN reform. Furthermore, the paper sheds light on the course of the mission and the involvement of the UN.
