This report summarizes the findings of a workshop on the relationship between Islam and democracy. The paper addresses questions such as why the majority of Muslim countries are not democratic and whether there is an inherent contradiction or incompatibility between Islam and democratic principles. The participants to the workshop do not agree with some Western analysts who contend that the religion is the reason that so many Muslim countries are not democratic.
