This paper discusses the relationship between Turkey and Iraq. The author argues that Turkey harbors a deep anxiety regarding the demonstration effect Kurdish independence or autonomy in Iraq would have on its own domestic Kurdish population. He also argues that US-Turkish relations have suffered because of uncertainty in Iraq. The paper concludes that, should Iraq fall into the hands of a fundamentalist Iranian type Shi’a regime, it is quite possible that both the United States and the European Union will want to see Ankara become the bulwark against both Iran and Iraq.
