This paper discusses China's views on the conflict on the Korean peninsula and the development of North Korea. The paper reviews China's policy toward North Korea and the dilemma attached to it, points to limits of the Six-Party Talks and of China's diplomacy and assesses the implications of a possibly unstable North Korea. The paper argues that China and the US should take the possibility into account that North Korea's leadership and political system might crumble and lead to the greatest challenge in East Asia since the Korean War.
