This paper addresses the 2007 elections in Nigeria and their implications for the security situation in the country. The paper discusses the importance of the elections, the danger of electoral fraud and competitive rigging as well as inter-party and ethno-regional tensions. Subsequently, the paper comments on regional issues in the Niger Delta, the policy of Nigeria's neighbors and the implications of President Obasanjo's push for a third term. The paper argues that the real challenge in producing free and fair elections involves what happens before election day.
