Following the US’ lifting of a wide range of economic sanctions on Sudan in October 2017, this report examines the perceptions of Sudanese citizens towards future US-Sudan relations. To do so, the text’s author draws on fieldwork and interviews conducted with Sudanese citizens in early 2018. A key finding is that while most interviewed welcomed the sanctions’ removal, Sudan’s deteriorating economy, government repression, and a failure to resolve Sudan’s multiple conflicts overshadowed the US overture. The author also notes that a considerable concern for the US should be the divergent perceptions, and misunderstandings, that exist among Sudanese about the goals of the US engagement process with Sudan’s government.
