This report examines the results of the 2006 presidential results in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by tracing the history of the Mouvement de Libération du Congo (MLC) and its transition from rebel movement to political party. The paper explores career and development of presidential candidate Jean-Pierre Bemba, reviews the policy, program and course of the MLC and discusses the DRC's situation one year after the elections. The author argues that among the DRC's numerous challenges is the narrowing of political space for opposition politics, marked by increased government repression.
