This publication demonstrates how race is fundamentally linked to political thinking in democratic South Africa. The author analyzes speeches by the country's first two black presidents after apartheid, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. He discusses how the two men confront the political task of addressing race at a conjuncture where the issue is the determining factor in South African life.
