This report examines the hack of the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) computer network during the 2016 US Presidential elections, as well as related attacks that have been attributed to Russian actors. While exploring this topic, the authors specifically address 1) the background and chronology of events before and during the DNC hack, including those that fed rising US-Russian tensions; 2) the tools, techniques and targets involved in the cyber assault; 3) the social, political, economic and technological fallout of the DNC hack; and 4) what state actors can do to decrease the risks of similar attacks.
