This publication contends that religious actors and institutions are the most important peace actors in South Sudan. However, due in part to efforts by the government to constrain their influence, such religious actors are not using their legitimacy effectively to turn the tide from war and violence to peace and reconciliation. In response, the text’s author examines 1) the religious landscape of the country; 2) challenges impeding the peace work of religious actors; 3) how policymakers and practitioners could improve their engagement with religious actors for peace, and more.
