This paper argues that the upcoming selection of a new UN Secretary-General (SG) could be a potential turning point for the organization, particularly when it comes to organizational transparency and gender balance. As part of her analysis, the author carefully dissects the various rules that govern the SG selection process and then gauges their actual ability to produce a suitable outcome. She further argues that as the UN struggles to address issues such as climate change, terrorism, and poverty, the increased and active involvement of both the General Assembly and Security Council must be an essential component of the current selection process.
