This publication suggests that the primary reason for the US military presence in Syria is not to combat the so-called Islamic State, but to counter Russia and Iran's presence in the region by keeping Syria weak and partitioned. The text´s author also claims it is about oil. For instance, the US currently covers one third of the Syria’s territory and controls a number of key oil fields that accounted for a staggering 90% of pre-war oil production. Further, she suggests that a partitioning of Syria into spheres of influence would facilitate Israeli annexation of the Golan Heights, allowing US and Israeli energy companies to exploit the area´s oil reserves.
